These notes, written by Dr Paul Dawkins, are a small textbook for a calculus course at Lamar University. Many students sing their praises. Sometimes, less is more.

Texts

You should make sure that the ISBN matches before you purchase online. I encourage you to purchase a used book. Used book prices fluctuate wildly, so I haven't quoted them here. If you find a cheap place to buy, let me know and I'll post it here.
  • Calculus, 8th edition, by Larson, Hostetler, and Edwards. ISBN: 0-618-50298-X
This is the official calculus text at CSI, and contains the chapters that are used in MTH 231, MTH 232, and MTH 233. For this section of MTH 231, you will not need the 8th edition (earlier editions are equivalent for our purposes). It costs $153 new at Amazon.com, and $131 new at ecampus.com. Best Book Buys.
  • Calculus of a Single Variable, by Larson, Hostetler, and Edwards. ISBN: 0-618-50303-X
This text contains the chapters of the above book that are used in MTH 231 and MTH 232, and is therefore cheaper. But you can't use it for MTH 233. It costs $120 new at Amazon.com, and $121 new at ecampus.com. Best Book Buys.
  • Calculus Demystified, by Steven Krantz. ISBN: 0-071-39308-0
This text is the strongly recommended warm-up text. It has a few sample problems sprinkled into the text, and all of these sample problems appear on your homework: WeBWorK will tell you if you got it right. The recommended way to get through this course is to begin each topic by reading about it in this book, then trying to do as much of the homework as seems straightforward, and then to look at the examples and explanation in the more advanced Calculus textbook. It costs $15 at Amazon.com, and $15 at ecampus.com. Best Book Buys.
